The Rhode Island Blood Center began accepting 16-year-old donors (Feb. 1), beginning with a blood drive at LaSalle Academy. First up was Mallory Moreau, followed closely by Katherine Agliata, both juniors at LaSalle.

More than twenty 16-year-olds were scheduled to donate at the LaSalle drive. Legislation was passed last summer and signed by the Governor in the fall that lowered the blood donation age from 17 to 16. The Blood Center waited until today to implement the policy, allowing for sufficient time to educate parents and students about blood donation. Sixteen year old donors must weigh 130 pounds or more (for those 17 and older it is 110 pounds) and have a Blood Center permission slip signed by their parents or guardian.

Permission slips are available at schools holding drives, the Blood Center’s fixed locations (see www.ribc.org for locations), or on the Blood Center’s Web Site (www.ribc.org ).
